Debate 1913 – the speakers

Arthur Bennett, Junior Scholar, Prefect.  Went to Keble College, Oxford. Served with the Devon Regt in Egypt and Mesopotamia during WW1.  Became a schoolmaster at Rossall School and King’s School, Chester.

Guy Boas, Exhibitioner, Prefect, won the English Literature Prize.  Doulgas Jerrold Scholar for English Literature at Christ Church, Oxford.  Served with the Oxford Hussars (Yeomanry) during WW1.  Schoolmaster at St Paul’s School, Headmaster of Sloane School, Chelsea.  Lecturer in English Literature at Oxford University. Authority on Shakespeare

Geoffrey Adams, Senior Prefect, Junior Scholar, Richards Gold Medal, won the History Prize.  Demyship Magdalen College, Oxford.  Served with the Suffolk Regiment inWW1. Killed in action at Lesboeufs, 1st November, 1916

Roger Mackarness, played for the Cricket XI. Served in France during WW1.  At the English Speaking Union from 1927: Page Memorial Librarian, Education Secretary and Editor ‘The English Speaking World.’

Andrew Nugee, Senior Prefect, Junior Scholar, played for the Soccer XI. Served in France in WW1, severely wounded in 1916. Magdalen College, Oxford. Took Holy Orders in 1921 and served various parishes, including Chaplain to St Dunstan’s College for the Blind

Lawrence Westmore, Prefect, Junior Scholar, Richards Gold Medal. Exhibitioner, Wadham College, Oxford, 1st Class Classical Mods.  Served with the Hampshire Regt in Ww1. Killed in action at Beaumont Hamel, Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916

Sidney Groves, Exhibitioner, Prefect, Richards Gold Medal. Exhibitioner, Wadham College, Oxford, 1912-14, University College, Oxford, 1918-20.  Served with the York and Lanaster Regt in France in WW1, severely wounded. Took Holy Orders in 1921 and then served in various parishes

Maurice Fenwick.  Served with the Devon Regt in France in WW1.  Killed in action near Ecoust, 2nd April, 1917

Alick Blyth, Senior Prefect, Junior Scholar, platyed for the Rugby XV and Cricket XI.  Scholar of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, 1915. Served in France in WW1. Killed in action near Ypres, 23rd August, 1917

Cyprian Slocock, Prefect, Junior Scholar. Served with the Ox & Bucks LI in France in WW1. Died of wounds, 3rd April, 1918
